Ecology: Saprobic; growing in clusters (rarely growing alone) on the wood of hardwoods or conifers; spring, summer, and fall (and over winter in warm climates); widely distributed and common in montane western North America, and occasionally reported from the Appalachian Mountains. The illustrated and described collections are from Colorado.
Cap: 3-5.5 cm; convex, becoming broadly convex or nearly flat; sticky when fresh; bald or, when young, with scattered whitish to yellowish fibrils; tawny to orangish brown, changing color markedly as it dries out and fading to yellowish or brownish (often passing through a two-toned stage); the margin finely lined when moist.
Gills: Attached to the stem by means of a notch; close; short-gills frequent; whitish to pale tan when young, becoming cinnamon brown; at first covered by a whitish to pale tan partial veil.
Stem: 5-9 cm long; up to 1 cm thick; tapered to the base; dry; silky near the apex; with a fairly persistent whitish ring that features an orangish brownish edge and eventually becomes orangish brown overall--or with merely a ring zone; whitish becoming brown from the base up; covered with small, whitish to brownish scales.
Flesh: Whitish; unchanging when sliced.
Odor and Taste: Not distinctive.
Chemical Reactions: KOH negative on cap surface.
Spore Print: Cinnamon brown.
Microscopic Features: Spores 6-8 x 4-5 m; subellipsoid to sublacrymoid; with a well developed apical pore; smooth; pale brown to brownish golden in KOH. Cheilocystidia 35-50 x 7.5-12.5 m; lageniform with a long neck and a subcapitate to subclavate apex; thin-walled; smooth; hyaline in KOH. Pleurocystidia not found. Pileipellis an ixotrichoderm; elements 2.5-7.5 m wide, smooth, hyaline to brownish or golden in KOH. Clamp connections present.

At DAWN’s 2026 Annual Gala & Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C., we honored Ahmed Shihab-Eldin (@aseisfree), an Emmy-nominated journalist, presenting him with the 2026 Jamal Khashoggi Defender of Justice Award, for his courageous journalism, outspoken defense of Palestinian rights, and commitment to speaking truth despite the personal consequences.
Throughout his career, Ahmed has challenged mainstream media's failures, exposing how political and corporate interests can shape coverage and silence uncomfortable truths. For him, journalism is not simply about reporting facts, but about using stories to illuminate the human condition and, in his words, “to move society forward.”
His reporting and advocacy have been uncompromising, including on Palestine. “Language matters,” he reminds us, challenging the unequal ways Palestinian and Israeli lives are portrayed in the media. He insists that genuine peace requires equality, accountability, Palestinian self-determination, and an end to occupation.
In March 2026, Ahmed was arrested in Kuwait, where he was visiting family, after sharing a news clip about events there. His 52-day detention and Kuwait’s revocation of his citizenship underscore the personal cost journalists can face for exercising their right to speak freely.
Yet his message remains one of courage, solidarity, and hope: “Do not underestimate the power of connecting with other human beings and drawing strength from there,” he says. “Because that is how change happens historically: political change, social change for any community.”

Yeah, I’m not so sure that’s an entirely safe conclusion to draw from high voting numbers in traditionally red counties. I’m not saying they are definitely wrong, I’m just saying that that’s a bit of a leap. It could very well be that the Dems in those traditionally red counties are unusually motivated to fix this shit show, too.
