A black and white analog photo showing a dense, shadowy forest. Up front, two thick, twisted tree trunks grab your attention, their rough bark lit up by sharp beams of light cutting through the scene. In the background, a whole crowd of thinner trees fades into the mist, but there’s still plenty going on. Light slices through at an angle, catching bits of bark and leaves, making the whole place feel alive and uneasy. The ground’s rough, with patches of grass and scattered rocks. The mood is tense and mysterious, like the forest’s hiding something. A soft vignette around the edges pulls your eyes toward the center, where the light feels almost theatrical.

Beal’s Island, June 2025.
My first ancestors to come to Maine settled on Beal’s Island. Distant relatives still live here but the lineage I’m directly descended from have lived a few hours south down the coast for the past 5 or so generations.

Spruce forest lines the coast right down to the pink granite shoreline and a few spruce branches frame the shot. It is low tide and a type of seaweed, rockweed, covers the rocks below the high tide line. The waters surface is relatively placid and reflects the headland and the sky in varying shades of emerald, teal, pale blue, and white. A few islands are in the distance.
