One of my students refers to me in her thesis draft as "supervisor and provider of data"
which makes me feel like the sage in a fantasy novel.

I was thinking about #linguistics this morning and I had a thought: Can people tell me some jokes that ONLY work in certain accents/dialects? Wordplay is a thing most humans do, but I was thinking about how much pronunciation goes into it.
Happy #StPatricksDay!
It may be a rather obvious topic, but this old video about the Potato might be just the tasty morsel you’re looking for today!

I'm kinda curious how mechanical typewriters used to handle languages with diacritics. Did they need extra keys or did people have to backspace and type over the glyph?
Azernews: Azerbaijan advancing AI projects, including Azerbaijani language database. “Fariz Jafarov, Executive Director of the Center for Analysis and Coordination of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, highlighted a major initiative to create a large Azerbaijani language database for artificial intelligence development, Azernews reports.”
English should have diacritics.
It would be nice if we didn't have to do things like "sooooo" to indicate stretching out the syllable.

There are multiple questions in Geoff Lindsay’s short multiple choice questionnaire on the changing use of *multiple* in English.
It only took me a couple of minutes.
I'm so proud of my academic department (Linguistics at University of Arizona). We run a table at the Tucson Festival of Books, in the Science City portion, where we get lots and lots of members of the general public of all ages involved in hands-on activities about language. We use ultrasound to show them how their tongues move while they talk, which got reactions like freaky! awesome! weird! cool! We also did an activity about what language family your family's/ancestor's language fits into, which was a huge hit. I twisted a whole lot of arms last week to get enough volunteers to staff the table (and did eventually succeed), and I'm so proud of our department for putting the effort in to do public outreach about science this way. #linguistics #Tucson #UniversityOfArizona #AcademicChatter
