Scientists have combined passive acoustic monitoring, machine-learning tools and aerial surveys to estimate the population of North Atlantic right whales in Cape Cod Bay.
Using the method, researchers from Cornell University in the U.S. were able to estimate the daily population of the whales over a period of four months.

Far from international forums and economical centers, locals in one of the Amazon deforestation hotspots seek alternatives to agribusiness and gold mines.
Mongabay went to Pará state’s southwest and found examples of people struggling to keep sustainable initiatives in a region dominated by soy, cattle, gold and logging.

A rare population of leucistic, or partially white, purple-faced langurs near Sri Lanka’s Sinharaja Forest Reserve has attracted ecotourism interest, even as monkeys in general are perceived by farmers as crop-raiding pests.
Unlike albinism, leucism causes a partial loss of pigmentation, and researchers have documented around 30 white langurs in the area.

If these areas are truly “protected,” why are #IndustrialFleets allowed to plunder them? It’s time to ban supertrawlers from MPAs and hold governments accountable.

Endangered Caribbean reef sharks and other shark species are making a striking recovery in Belize after plummeting due to overfishing between 2009 and 2019, according to recent observations.
Experts say the establishment of no-shark-fishing zones around Belize’s three atolls in 2021 is what enabled the population boom.

In the rainforests of West Kalimantan, in Indonesian Borneo, the Indigenous Dayak Iban listen to what they call “omen birds,” or birds they say sing messages from spirits, Mongabay’s Sonam Lama Hyolmo reported in November 2024.
In 2025, Mongabay will be increasing coverage of pangolins, the world’s most trafficked mammals. As part of this effort, we are hosting a webinar on March 27, 2025, to discuss how journalists can improve reporting on their illegal trade. Don’t miss this important conversation. If you are caught cutting down the Amazon Rainforest illegally, chances are you will get off without being required to pay for the environmental damage. According to a recent report, only 5% of offenders have paid court-ordered fines for deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon.

Africa’s elephants have been in dramatic decline for 50 years. A new study explores what can be done to save them.
From @ConversationUS: The research "put together data from 1,325 surveys of elephant populations — everything we could find — to evaluate how elephant numbers in Africa have changed."
Gebe Island in eastern Indonesia is the site of seven nickel mining concessions.
Local Indigenous communities say the mining sites have put their food security at risk, with pollution affecting fruit trees and root vegetables as well as depletion of local fisheries.
Forestry campaigners say the mining clashes with a 2007 law on small islands designed to prevent large-scale environmental destruction in these fragile ecosystems.

The Galápagos rail, a small, black, ground bird, hadn’t been seen on Floreana Island in the Galápagos since 1835, when Charles Darwin first described it. That changed recently when researchers monitoring birds on Floreana recorded the rail at three different locations. These new sightings after 190 years are likely the result of efforts to eradicate invasive species on the island.

Ocean #conservation tip of the week: When we think about microplastics, we often think about trash, but "dust" from synthetic tires is a significant source. As much as 78% of microplastics come from tires! Tire bits break off and get washed into storm drains.
Less driving = fewer ocean microplastics
Better materials science and regulations = also good!
